As an interdisciplinary centre of the University of Bern, the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) has the mandate to promote and implement research, application, and teaching in the field of sustainable development and global change, in cooperation with academic partners and the Global North and South.

As part of this mandate, CDE offers a Bachelor Minor, a Master Minor, and a CAS in Sustainable Development, as well as an international graduate school. In addition, CDE advises all faculties of the university on the integration of the topic of sustainable development into their study programmes.

Tasks
You will work with a team to help shape the structure and curriculum of our upcoming international study programme in Sustainability Transformations (Master Mono, 120 ECTS, planned start Sept 2024). You will also supervise and mentor master's theses, and design and lead courses related to sustainability transformations, integrating concepts of transformation research (analysis and transformation approaches), systems thinking, as well as entry and leverage points for transformation processes. Further tasks include:
  • Developing and coordinating interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary group projects and activities within the programme
  • Facilitating student engagement and active learning through innovative teaching methods and participatory approaches
  • Supervising certificate theses in the CAS Sustainable Development
Requirements
  • PhD degree in a relevant field, such as Sustainability Science, Environmental Studies, Social Sciences, or a related discipline, with a focus on transformation research
  • Proven expertise and research experience in sustainability transformations is required; practical knowledge of real-world laboratories and participatory research approaches is an advantage
  • Proven experience in university teaching, preferably in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary courses
  • Proven research experience, preferably also in the Global South
  • Existing third-party funding and/or interest in additional research activities is an advantage
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in German is an advantage

The successful candidate should be proactive in seeking and acquiring new research projects in the field of sustainability transformations. You will work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. Your strong organizational skills enable you to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
